It is with great regret that I make this post regarding the passing of Clifford Geertz yesterday, one of anthropology's most prolific thinkers. His work on religion and symbolic/interpretive anthropology has profoundly influenced the way we think about and interpret culture, something few other anthropologists have managed to do. I know how much his writing has influenced my education and my own work, and I feel very saddened by his death - it seems funny, but in some ways, I feel like I knew him. (And I know many other anthropologists who "grew up" with his ideas and feel the same way.) I would encourage you to read a lecture he gave in 1999, "A Life of Learning", an interesting look at his life and accomplishments in his own words.
